To finalise your full membership and collect your library card, visit a branch open for browsing and borrowing. You’ll need to show proof of identity and permanent residential address. Official documents such as a driver licence, student card, bank statement or rates or utilities notice are accepted.


To finalise your temporary online membership, email a copy of your proof of identity to librarymemberships@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au. Official documents such as a driver licence (provide scan of front and back), rates or utilities notice showing your current residential address are accepted.


Applicants under 18 years old
A parent or guardian is required to approve your application. They will need to visit a branch with you to show proof of identity, including their residential address and Medicare card listing your name. For temporary online memberships this proof of identity should be emailed to librarymemberships@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.

eCard1 Resource: You can pick up your library card from any of our libraries. For locations and operating hours click here.
Remember to bring with you suitable identification and proof of address.

eCard2 Resource: If you are under 18 you must also have a copy of the permission letter signed by your parent guardian.

eCard3 Resource: You are able to use our online services prior to collecting your library card.
Use the barcode number provided above to browse databases, to search and reserve items via the online catalogue.

Conditions of Membership

Join the library

City of Sydney Library membership is free for all NSW residents. Fees apply for non-residents. There is no minimum age requirement, but if you’re under 18 years old, your application will need to be approved by a parent or guardian.


There are 3 types of membership available:

Full membership for NSW residents

With a full membership you can borrow from any of our branches and access our digital collections through your online account. Memberships are valid for 3 years.

To apply, complete this online form or visit a staffed branch open for browsing and borrowing. To finalise your full membership and collect your library card, you’ll need to visit a staffed branch and show proof of identity and permanent residential address. This can be a driver licence, student card, bank statement, or rates notice.

Membership for non-NSW residents

If you’re an interstate or international visitor, without a permanent NSW address, you can apply for a 3-month membership. Fees and borrowing limits apply.

To apply, complete this online form or visit a staffed branch open for browsing and borrowing. To finalise your membership and collect your library card, you’ll need to visit a staffed branch and show proof of identity. This can be a driver licence, student card, bank statement or rates notice.

Temporary online membership

This membership is available for City of Sydney residents and ratepayers living in NSW who want to join the library without going into a branch. With this temporary membership, valid until 30 June 2021, you can access our digital collections through your online account. You can also borrow from the physical collection using the reserve and collect service available at some branches.

View our City of Sydney boundaries to check that you are a resident. Then apply by completing this online form and emailing a photo or scanned copy of your proof of identity, including your permanent residential address to librarymemberships@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.

Official documents such as a driver licence (provide scan of front and back), rates or utilities notice showing your permanent residential address are accepted. To convert your temporary online membership to a full 3-year membership, visit a staffed branch open for browsing and borrowing before 30 June 2021. You will need to provide proof of identity, including your permanent residential address.

Applicants under 18 years

If you‘re under 18 years, a parent or guardian is required to sign your application. They will need to visit a branch with you to show proof of identity, including their permanent residential address and Medicare card showing your name. For temporary online memberships this proof of identity should be emailed to librarymemberships@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.

Conditions of membership

  • I agree to abide by all City of Sydney Library policies and conditions of use and:
  • * I accept responsibility for all items borrowed on my card and pay replacement costs plus processing charges for any items lost, stolen or damaged
  • * report lost/stolen membership cards to City of Sydney Library immediately. Replacement cards cost $7
  • * return items on or before the due date or check whether the item can be renewed
  • * respect the rights and security of library employees and other library users
  • * notify the City of Sydney Library of any changes to contact details provided
