To finalise your membership, speak to one of our team members or visit one of our staffed branches. To collect your library card you’ll need to bring proof of your identity including your residential address.

Identification documents can be presented in a physical or digital format. Electronic documents can be printed, displayed on a computer screen or a device. Personal letters, envelopes or emails printed or on screen cannot be accepted as proof of identity.

Documentation must be sighted by staff for identification purposes but are not kept by the City of Sydney.



eCard1 Resource: You can pick up your library card from any of our libraries. For locations and operating hours click here.
Remember to bring with you suitable identification and proof of address.
eCard2 Resource: If you are under 18 you must also have a copy of the permission letter signed by your parent guardian.
eCard3 Resource: You are able to use our online services prior to collecting your library card.
Use the barcode number provided above to browse databases, to search and reserve items via the online catalogue.
You can also, login eCard4 Resource: using your barcode and password or register another member.
eCard5 Resource: Residents and ratepayers of the City of Sydney local area can verify and complete their membership by emailing proof of ID and address to: library@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.< br />

Conditions of Membership

Join the library

We provide free membership to anyone, no matter where you live or how long you’ll be visiting Sydney.


We have 3 types of membership:

1. Full membership for 3 years with proof of your residential address in NSW.

2. Visitor membership for 3 months if you live outside NSW, are visiting from overseas or staying at a temporary address in Sydney.

3. Temporary membership for 12 months if you’re experiencing homelessness, living in a refuge or don’t want to disclose your address for safety reasons.

Loan limits and borrowing conditions apply.

After you’ve joined, you’ll need to visit a library branch and provide proof of your identity.


Identification can be presented in a physical or digital format. Examples include current driver licence, identity card or passport. You can supply a rental agreement, bank statement, pension card or utility bill as proof of address.


If you’re under 16, you’ll need your parent or guardian to visit the branch with you to complete your application.


Conditions of membership


I agree to:

  • * accept responsibility for all items borrowed on my card and pay replacement costs plus processing charges for any items lost, stolen or damaged
  • * return items on or before the due date and understand my membership will be suspended if I have overdue items or outstanding charges
  • * report lost/stolen membership cards to City of Sydney Library immediately
  • * notify the City of Sydney Library of any changes to my contact details by phone, email or by updating my account online
  • * supply an email address or a mobile number to receive digital notifications about my reservations, loans and renewals
  • * respect the rights and security of library staff and other library users
  • * comply with all library policies, including the conditions of entry and computer and wifi terms of use, and all relevant laws including the Copyright Act 1968 and Library Regulation 2018 (NSW).

I acknowledge that:

  • * the library does not censor its resources and items aren’t excluded from the collection unless prohibited by law
  • * as a parent/guardian of a child under 18, I am responsible for supervising my child’s use of library resources, services and facilities
  • * digital notifications provided by the library about my reservations, loans and renewals are a courtesy and it is my responsibility to monitor and manage my account
  • * use of any third-party online platforms provided by the library is subject to each platform’s terms, conditions and privacy policies and it is my responsibility to review and comply with those terms and conditions, and be aware of how each platform uses and stores my personal information
  • * if I fail to comply with the membership terms and conditions my membership may be suspended or I may be temporarily excluded from the library.

Privacy protection notice

Purpose of collection: This information is collected to validate library membership which provides access to resources and services. We will contact the borrower on issues relating to their membership and send communications related to library services.

Intended recipients: City of Sydney employees. Any approved contractors required to provide this service.

Supply: The supply of this information is voluntary. If you are unwilling to provide this information, the City of Sydney may be unable to provide access to City of Sydney services.

Access/Correction: Please contact the City of Sydney on 02 9265 9333 or at council@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au. to access or correct your personal information.

Storage: The City of Sydney, located at 456 Kent Street, Sydney NSW 2000, is collecting this information and will store it securely.

Other uses: We will use your personal information for the purpose for which it was collected and may also use it as is necessary for the exercise of other functions, including updating our membership records or advise of service changes and updates.
