Join the library

City of Sydney Library membership is free for all members.
There is no minimum age requirement, but if you are under 18 years old, a parent or guardian is required to approve your application.
They will need to visit a branch to show proof of identity, including their residential address and Medicare card listing your name.


We have 2 types of membership available:

Full membership for NSW residents

Membership is valid for 3 years.

To activate your membership and collect your library card, visit a staffed branch.You’ll need to show proof of identity and permanent residential address.
Official documents such as a driver license, student card, bank statement, rates or utilities notice are accepted.

If you are a City of Sydney resident you can email a copy of your proof of identity to librarymemberships@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au.

Membership for non-NSW residents

Membership is valid for 1 month.

If you’re an interstate or international visitor to Sydney, without a permanent NSW address, you can apply for membership.
With this membership you can borrow from any of our branches and access our digital collections through your online account.
Borrowing limits apply.

Conditions of membership

• I agree to abide by all City of Sydney Library policies and conditions of use and:
• * I accept responsibility for all items borrowed on my card and pay replacement costs plus processing charges for any items lost, stolen or damaged
• * report lost/stolen membership cards to City of Sydney Library immediately. Replacement cards cost $5
• * return items on or before the due date or check whether the item can be renewed
• * respect the rights and security of library employees and other library users
• * notify the City of Sydney Library of any changes to contact details provided

Privacy and personal information protection notice

Purpose of collection: This information is collected to validate library membership which provides access to resources and services. We will contact the borrower on issues relating to their membership and send communications related to library services.

Intended recipients: City of Sydney employees. Any approved contractors required to provide this service.

Supply: The supply of this information is voluntary. If you are unwilling to provide this information, the City of Sydney may be unable to provide access to City of Sydney services.

Access/Correction: Please contact the City of Sydney on 02 9265 9333 or at council@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au. to access or correct your personal information.

Storage: The City of Sydney, located at 456 Kent Street, Sydney NSW 2000, is collecting this information and will store it securely.

Other uses: We will use your personal information for the purpose for which it was collected and may also use it as is necessary for the exercise of other functions, including updating our membership records or advise of service changes and updates.
